US-China-Korea Trilateral Conference: Northeast Asia in Transition

Chey Institute for Advanced Studies (CIAS) held its inaugural conference entitled “Northeast Asia in Transition” on February 14-15, 2019 to celebrate its launch. The conference was made up of five open sessions and two closed sessions. A total of 35 participants – thirteen from the US, seven from China, and fifteen from South Korea – joined the in-depth discussion on security, economics, scientific, and technological dimensions of the Northeast Asian region.

Before the official sessions began, Chairman Chey Tae-won of the SK Group and CIAS reminded everyone of the founding father of the SK Group Chey Jong-hyon’s philosophy with regard to education and human capital while emphasizing the importance of realizing values such as peace, balance, harmony, and happiness beyond simple goal of exploring research questions. During his opening remarks, President Park In-kook of the CIAS mentioned the Princeton-based Institute for Advanced Study where an exceptional pool of brilliant minds representing the US, China, and Korea, such as Albert Einstein, Julius Oppenheimer, Yang Zhenning, and Benjamin Whisoh Lee, spent their years. He stated that Chey Institute will serve the role of a compass and a powerhouse for creating interactive dialogue in this era of growing uncertainty and unpredictability.
